60 seconds with…Robert Sykes, Managing Director, Shorts Industries Ltd

60-Second-Interview

Tell us about your business, when was it formed and what do you do?

Shorts has been in the lift industry since 1945. Recently, we have specialised in providing high-quality lift equipment, spare parts, and technical support to lift installation and maintenance companies across the UK and Ireland. Our mission is to empower lift professionals with reliable solutions and exceptional service. We tailor our products and services to our customers’ needs.

Who are your customers? Which markets do you serve?

Our customers include lift installation and maintenance companies, from small independent firms to larger, well-established businesses. We focus on the UK and Ireland markets, supporting professionals who work on lifts in all market sectors and whatever the application.

How many times have you been to LIFTEX?

We’ve been attending LIFTEX for several years, and it remains a key event on our calendar. It’s a fantastic opportunity to engage with the broader lift community, showcase our latest innovations, and discuss industry trends.

What are the main issues that your customers deal with and how do you help them?

Our customers often face challenges such as sourcing reliable equipment quickly, modernising ageing lift systems, and adapting to new technologies or regulations. We address these by offering a wide range of in-stock products, innovative solutions like the DMG PB4 lift controller and Shorts-DMG Passenger Lift Package, and expert technical experience and support. Our customers rely on us to deliver on our promises so that they can deliver on theirs.

Are there any issues that specifiers, contractors / owners should be aware of in the next 12 months?

The following 12 months will likely see continued focus on energy efficiency, regulatory compliance, and accessibility in lift systems. We encourage specifiers and contractors to plan for modernisation projects and explore solutions that meet today’s standards and are future-ready.

How can we, as an industry, help designers and building owners to become more energy efficient and meet Net Zero targets?

Collaboration is key. By promoting energy-efficient technologies, offering clear guidance on compliance, and highlighting the long-term cost savings of sustainable solutions, we can help designers and building owners make informed decisions. Products like our DMG PB4 lift controller, which integrates advanced features for improved energy performance, and our Langer & Laumann Lift Door Operator are great examples of how the industry can contribute to Net Zero goals.

What will you be promoting / what can visitors expect to see on your stand?

We will showcase our range of products and services. We will focus on our DMG PB4 lift controller, a control system known for its flexibility, reliability, and efficiency.

We’re also excited to present the Shorts-DMG Passenger Lift package—a solution tailored to lift professionals’ needs that reflects our commitment to providing high-quality products.

Finally, we’ll introduce exciting new developments to our ‘Lift Professional’ brand as we celebrate those working in the lift industry.

What advice would you give to anyone visiting the show? What should they look for and how can they get the most from their visit?

Please plan your visit ahead of time and make a list of the companies or products you’d like to learn more about. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and engage with exhibitors—it’s a great chance to explore innovations and strengthen your network. And, of course, stop by our stand to discover how we can support your projects and operations.
